Language
In drama feelings and ideas are expressed through verbal and non-verbal language
Movement
Movement expresses action, and like language, is dictated by situations, role and relationships. Mood, symbols and morifs can be expressed by body language, which can enrich the dramatic action and create powerful meanings
Rhythm
The manipulation of timing through changes of pace or tempo. Rhythms are manipulated according to focus, situation, characters and dramatic tension
Dramatic meaning
Is created through the manipulation of the elements of drama which are inter-related and inter-dependent. Dramatic meaning is what is communicated between the audience and the performers
Audience engagement
Having a coherent performance that engages the audience
Sound
Sound incorporates many aural devices to enhance the performance. Sounds may be as diverse as the use of sound effects to the use of body percusion
Role
Embracing a role involves representing a point of view and identifying with a particular set of values and attitudes. When a role is assumed, relationships between people, between people and ideas, between people and the environment
Character
Characterisation is the process of developing from a role to build a complex personality and background for a particular character. Intention, status and attitude are important ingredients for a character’s motivation and belief.
Tension
Tension is the force which drives all drama. There are 4 major ways of creating and intensifying dramatic tension. Tasks, relationships, surprise and mystery.
Time/place/situation
Time-The period in which dramatic action can occur. Place-Settings dictate which characters can occur, and certain places create tension. Situation-circumstances characters are in.
Space
Stage/performance space and the spatial design. Awareness of spatial relationships within the design are essential to the realisation of a cohesive performance
Structure
Plot lines that carry the dramatic action forward. Drama is comprised of a narrative structure
Moment
Moments in drama are fundamental to the pacing of the dramatic action. The tempo, which refer to the management of time in a broad sense, is often punctuated by the moment.
Symbols
Can help you understand and focus drama and sum up the meaning of the performance. They can be expressed through the visual imagery of language, movement gesture, objects, design and staging, helping to reinforce the meaning of the whole performance
Atmosphere
Atmosphere is the feeling or mood created by dramatic action is’s closely linked to tension.
