what does CVS STFL stand for?
color, value, shape, space, texture, form, line
Primary colors
are red, yellow and blue. They are called primary colors because all other colors are made from them.
secondary colors
are orange, green and purple (violet). They are called secondary colors because they are made from combining two primary colors together.
complementary colors
are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. For example, if you find red on the color wheel and look to the opposite side, you will see green. So green is said to be the complement of red. Blue is the complement of orange and yellow is the complement of violet.
cool colors
green, blue and violet, are colors that remind us of cool thing like water, grassy meadows.
warm colors
red, orange and yellow are colors that remind of hot items like the sun, fire, the coils of a heated electric stove.
Hue
means the name of a color. The hue of an apple might be a red, green or yellow. The hue of most pumpkins is orange.
value
Value refers to the differences in a hue or neutral ranging from the lightest to the darkest, for example white to black. A difference of value within a hue would be a light version of the color as opposed to a dark.
shape
A shape is defined as an area that is contained within a line or is seen and identified by a change of color, value or texture (2-D)
Geometrical shapes
are the perfect shapes we see in geometry…squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, etc
Organic shapes
are the shapes we see in nature. The shape of a leaf or a shell.
Space
Space is defined as the interval, or measurable distance, between pre established points or images. Space organizes elements in a composition.
Shallow perspective
image that appears flat
Actual perspective
image that seems to have depth
Texture
The tactile quality of a surface. Examples are slick, smooth, rough, velvety, bumpy, sharp
