Q

What is the difference between metals and non-metals of elements?

A

1) Metal elements are shiny, lustrous. Non-metals are dull (not bright) if solid.
2) Metals are solid at R.T.P (except mercury). Non-metals are mostly liquids or gas at R.T.P
3) Metals have high density except for Group I elements. Non metals are low in density.
4) Metals have high melting point (except group 1 elements and mercury). Non-metals have low boiling point (except for carbon and silicon).
5) Metal is both malleable and ductile. However, non-metals are brittle (for solids) which are easily broken when hammered.
6) Metals are sonorous but non-metals are not sonorous.
7) Metals are good conductor of electricity but non-metals are poor conductors of electricity except carbon (graphite).
8) Metals are good conductors of heat but non-metals are poor conductors of heat except carbon.

13
Q

What is a chemical change?

A

Chemical changes occur when a substance combines with another to form a new substance, called chemical synthesis or, alternatively, chemical decomposition into two or more different substances. They are not reversible.

16
Q

Why are noble gas monoatomic?

A

The name noble gas is given to them because they do not react with other elements. They are not reactive because of their electronic configuration. Due to this high stability, the noble gas atoms do not combine with other atoms. So, they do not form bonds with any other atoms and hence they are always monoatomic.

A

1) Mixture has no chemical reactions taking place when a mixture is formed.

2) A mixture has a variable composition by mass.
For example: Salt solution can have different amounts of salt dissolved in water.

3) A mixture has the same chemical properties as its components.
For example: steel which contains iron, can react with acid.
