Elements And Dimension Of Argumentation Flashcards
What are the elements and respective dimensions of argumentation?
Language - pragmatic dimension
Dialogue - dialogical dimension
Logic - logical dimension
Emotions (?) - rhetorical dimension
What’s the meaning of LANGUAGE in argumentation?
Refers to the conversational acts - how language is used; the purpose of an utterance (sentence) in a specific context.
To understand and analyze an argument we need to understand its meaning first and how it can contribute to move the conversation in a specific context.
What’s the pragmatic dimension?
Analysis of how the context and purpose of an argument affect meaning.
What is a dialogue?
An interaction between interlocutors. Arguments are exchanged to lead the interlocutor to accept a specific conclusion.
Coordinated actions in which two or more individuals pursue different types of shared goals (make a joint decision or establish what viewpoint is the most acceptable one)
Who are the individuals in a dialogue?
People with different backgrounds, beliefs and knowledge - commitments (propositions they hold as accepted).
What depends on the dialogical factors?
Force, persuasiveness and reasonableness of an argument.
What is the dialogical dimension related to?
It’s essentially related to the pragmatic one, as the analysis of the dialogue comprehends essentially the purpose and the meaning of the units thereof, namely utterances.
What is Logic?
Reasons provided to support a viewpoint - an argument is a reason. Certain premises can support a certain conclusion.
What does Logic study?
It’s the systematic study of principles governing the validity of arguments - while arguments are related to a specific topic, principles need to be more general (the more general, the wider their application).
What is formal Logic?
Highest level of abstraction, structures which can be necessarily or defeasibly valid.
What is the Logical dimension?
The most abstract dimension - we can establish the meaning and the purpose of an utterance and assess the reasonableness and persuasiveness of an argument in a dialogue by investigating the inferences that can be drawn from them.
What is the Rhetorical dimension?
Emotions are used to affect reasoning.
