Voice
Use your voice tone/speed/volume/pitch to convey what you want and in a tone that conveys your instruction
Commands/Marking
To give the dog clear consistent commands which convey the correct message in an appropriate manner
Lead
To provide safety and direction to your dog with minimal use in an appropriate manner and where necessary to provide control. Used correctly a lead can either weaken or strengthen responses as required
Presentation
To give a physical cue which directs the dog to search a specific item where the handler indicates
Search Pattern
To ensure a thorough and systematic search of an area which maximises the dogs ability to detect target odour
Speed
To work your dog at an optimum speed which maximises search intent and efficiency while keeping the dog motivated
Spacing
To allow an optimum amount of room between the handler and the object to be searched in which the dog can comfortably work in
Reacting to response behaviour
To accurately read the changes of behaviour and to react to those changes in an appropriate manner in order to maximise the rate of detection
Reward
To use reward in an appropriate and meaningful manner which builds and maintains motivation and increases the likelihood of desired behaviour recurring
Body Language
To use body language and movement to convey a clear and correct message to your dog, that compliments other verbal and non-verbal messages given to your dog
Stimulus control
Overall level of control that is used by the handler to work their dog ensuring they perform all required tasks in a motivated and effective manner with minimum of coercion l, force or negative stimuli
