Sexuality Education:
A life long process of acquiring info and forming attitudes, beliefs, and values encompassing sexual development, sexual/reproductive health, interpersonal relationships, affection, intimacy, body image, and gender roles.
Sexual abuse:
Any sexual act between an adult and child. Includes, fondling, penetration, intercourse, prostitution, group sex, oral sex, or forced observation of sexual acts.
Indicators of sexual abuse:
Fear of being alone with a specific person
Sleep disturbances such as nightmares, fear of going to bed, and fear of sleeping alone.
Irritability or short temper
Clinging to parent(s)
Unexplained fears
Changes in behavior/school work or in relating to friends/siblings
Behaving like a younger child (regression)
Sexual sophistication or greater knowledge than any in his/her age group
Running away from home or fear of going home
Physical signs of child abuse:
Difficulty in walking or sitting Pain or itching in genital areas Torn/stained or bloody underwear Bruises or bleeding in external genitals, vagina or anal areas Sexually transmitted diseases Pregnancy
Physical Abuse:
Any non accidental injury to a child.This includes hitting, kicking, slapping, shaking, burning, pinching, hair pulling, biting, chocking, throwing, shoving, whipping, and paddling.
Emotional Abuse:
Any attitude or behavior that interferes with a child’s mental health or social development. Includes:
Yelling
Screaming
Name calling
Shaming
Negative comparisons to others
Telling a child he/she is “bad”, “no good”, “worthless” or a “mistake”.
Physical neglect:
Failure to provide for a child’s needs in the form of supervision, housing, food, clothing, medical care and hygiene
Emotional Neglect:
Failure to provide affection and support necessary for the development of emotional, social, physical and intellectual well being.
Reporting Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect:
Must report when:
Suspected abuse has occurred
What can parents do to keep children safe at school:
Talk to children about day. No yes/no questions
Teach problem solving w/o fighting
Keep eyes on child Internet use
Ask about safety/emergency plans for school
Map out safety route to/from school or bus stop
Teach traffic safety and rules when walking/biking
Encourage children to walk/play in groups, never alone
Teach stranger danger.not to talk to or go with any person they do not know at all or not very well.
Help children learn address, phone number and parent/guardian names
Be aware of bullying. It can take place on the school bus, in the classroom, on the playground. it can take place anywhere.
