Element and Compound Vocab Flashcards
Element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down
Group
A column on the periodic table
Family
Group of elements with similar characteristics
Period
A row on the periodic table
Compound
A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined into a specific ratio
Mixture
Two or more substances that are together in the same place but their atoms are not chemically bonded
Atom
Basic particle all elements are made of
Proton
- positive charge
- have mass
- found in middle (nucleus)
Neutron
- neutral (no) charge
- have mass
- found in nucleus
Electron
- negative charge
- found outside nucleus on orbit
Atomic number
of protons
Atomic mass
Average mass (decimal)
Element symbol
Ex: Mg
Element name
Ex: Magnesium
Metal
On the left side of the periodic table
Nonmetal
On the right of the periodic table
Metalloids
They can have properties of both metals and nonmetals
They are semiconductors-They allow some electricity to pass through, but not all of it (useful in computer chips)
Chemical formula
Symbols that show the elements in a compound and the ratio of atoms
Homogeneous mixture
Same uniform appearance and composition throughout
Ex: Air
Heterogeneous mixture
Consists of visibly different substances of phases
Ex: Salad
