Element 10: Working at Height Flashcards
What is hierarchy of risk prevention for working at height?
- Avoid
- Prevent Falls (work equipment or other measures) where cannot be avoided.
- Minimise the distance & consequences of fall where risk cannot be eliminated.
Safe methods working in fragile roof?
• Roof ladders provide good foot & hold.
• Crawling boards laid across surface, supported by underlying & load bearing roof members.
Where can falls occur from flat roof?
• From edge of completed roof
• From roof where work is being completed.
• Through openings or gaps.
• Through fragile materials making up part of roof.
What measures should be taken to prevent falls of materials from a height?
• Not stacking near edges particularly unprotected
• Close boarding or sheeting of working platforms.
• Avoid carrying materials up or down ladders.
• Using physical safeguards- toe boards brick guards & sheeted.
When should a platform used for construction work where a person could fall more than 2m be inspected?
• Before use
• Every 7 days
• Mobile before use but not every time it’s relocated throughout day.
What safety features are used on scaffolding?
• Sole boards
• Base plates
• Toe boards
• Guardrails
• Brick Guards
• Debris netting
• waste chutes
What are main hazards of using ladders?
• Not tied or resting on firm ground, which may cause ladder to tip
• Poor storage & maintenance allowing ladder to rot, may cause rungs to break.
• Objects falling from height
• Contact with live overheads
Outline requirements for edge protection on working platforms.
• Top guardrail at least 950mm above working platform
• Intermediate rails gap no bigger than 470mm between toe boards & guardrail
• Toeboard must extend min 150mm above working platform
What is difference between standards, ledgers and transoms?
What is difference between tying and bracing?
Standards are vertical upright tubes.
Ledgers run horizontally parallel to each other and transoms span across ledgers.
Tying secured scaffolding to building
Braces add strength and keep framework rigid.
State safety precautions which need to be taken when using MEWP
• Select MEWP for terrain
• Site MEWP on firm stable ground
• Clearance around & overhead when operating
• Barriers to prevent struck vehicles & moving plant.
• Barriers to keep people from working platform
• Cradle to have guardrails harnesses worn extra precaution
• Controls inside cradle to control at height.
• Must not be overloaded
• Inspected 6 monthly (lifting equipment carry people)
• Restricted use trained authorised
What angle should ladders be positioned at?
What methods of roof access are there?
Independent Scaffolds, Fixed Scaffold towers, mobile scaffold towers, ladders, valley or parapets
What is fall arrest equipment intended to do?
Minimise effect of fall, part of SSOW. PPE regs 92 WAH regs 2005.
With regard to safety netting:
What are the two main types?
What are criteria for installing?
Personnel nets 100mm catch persons falling max 6m
Material debris 12-19mm falling objects
Where can drowning occur on construction sites?
Fall from construction site into water. Hazardous areas:
• Harbours
• Docks
• Wharves & Piers
• Lakes
• Rivers
• Streams
• Lagoons
• sea
• Swimming pools inc natural
• reservoirs
• factory tanks, vats
• Culverts
• Sewers
• Tide drag undertow
