Q

What are main hazards of using ladders?

A

• Not tied or resting on firm ground, which may cause ladder to tip
• Poor storage & maintenance allowing ladder to rot, may cause rungs to break.
• Objects falling from height
• Contact with live overheads

Q

Outline requirements for edge protection on working platforms.

A

• Top guardrail at least 950mm above working platform
• Intermediate rails gap no bigger than 470mm between toe boards & guardrail
• Toeboard must extend min 150mm above working platform

Q

What is difference between standards, ledgers and transoms?

What is difference between tying and bracing?

A

Standards are vertical upright tubes.
Ledgers run horizontally parallel to each other and transoms span across ledgers.

Tying secured scaffolding to building
Braces add strength and keep framework rigid.

Q

State safety precautions which need to be taken when using MEWP

A

• Select MEWP for terrain
• Site MEWP on firm stable ground
• Clearance around & overhead when operating
• Barriers to prevent struck vehicles & moving plant.
• Barriers to keep people from working platform
• Cradle to have guardrails harnesses worn extra precaution
• Controls inside cradle to control at height.
• Must not be overloaded
• Inspected 6 monthly (lifting equipment carry people)
• Restricted use trained authorised

A

•Suitable Sufficient RA prevention & protective measures.
• Boat/ craft must provide safe transport. Suitably constructed, maintained operated competent
• Rescue equip trained in use
• Guardrails if possibility fall. Floating stage scaffolds adjacent land
• Safety nets where scaffolds not possible all options exhausted.
• Employers provide training information instruction supervision
• Employers provide Safe place & system of work. Safe access egress handling of materials

17
Q

What additional precautions may be taken when working over or in vicinity of water?

A

Warning notices, buoyancy aids, safety boats, platforms & gangways, ladders, housekeeping, illumination of water surface, consulting weather forecast, first aid facilities, PPE life jackets, life buoys, rescue lines, safe operating procedures, safety nets & emergency procedures.

18
Q

What protective clothing & equipment is used when working over or in vicinity of water?

A

•Harnesses & belts where not possible to provide platform & nets safe anchorage
• Helmets.
• Footwear non slip. Rubber & thigh boots avoided.
