Electrosurgical Safety Flashcards
ESU stands for what?
Electrosurgical unit (bovie)
What is the purpose of ESU (bovie) safety?
ESU (bovie) is prob the least understood technology that is used on an everyday basis. It has the potential to cause patient injury very time it is used. The ST must have a clear understanding of of the ESU and how to apply it safely in the operating room.
When was and who created the first ESU?
In the 1920’s, the first ESU was developed by Dr. Harvey Cushing, Ed Flarsheim, Henry Liebel, and Dr. William T. Bovie.
What are the 2 concepts of electricity?
Electricity always returns to the ground and electricity always takes the path of least resistance.
Define current:
The flow of electrons- Bovies use AC current
Define circuit:
A pathway for uninterrupted flow of electrons
Define voltage:
The force pushing current through resistance.
Define resistance:
Obstacle to the flow of current.
Define Hertz:
One complete cycle of AC current. A complete cycle occurs when moves in one direction and then reverses its course. Ex. 60 Hz refers to 60 AC cycles per second.
