electrostatics in our lives Flashcards
what is electrical discharge?
the process in which electric charges are transferred very quickly
1– what happens to static charges in lightning?
they begin to separate in the cloud
2– then what happens to the cloud?
the top of the cloud becomes positive, the bottom of the cloud becomes negative
3– what does the cloud do to the tree in order to become positively charged?
it inducts the tree
4– what happens to the charges?
they move across the air and cause electrical discharge
what is a lightning rod?
a metal sphere or point attached to the highest part of a building and connected to the ground in order to redirect the electrical discharge away from the building
how does spray paint easily find its target?
the paint coming out of the nozzle gains a negative charge through friction. the surface of the target has been given a positive charge. unlike charges attract
photocopier/ laser printer selenium coated drum gains what charge?
positive
photocopier/ laser printer images are projected onto the drum; which areas remain positively charged?
dark areas
photocopier/ laser printer negative toner sticks to which parts of the drum?
positive areas
positively charged paper from photocopier/ laser printer attract ____ from the drum
toner
how is the toner fused to the paper
heat and pressure
electrostatic precipitator gas contain tiny particles of ____
pollutants
electrostatic precipitator gas, before released, is sent through pipes that charge the pollutants ____
negatively
gas from the electrostatic precipitator then goes through an area with positively charged plates; what happens to the pollutants?
they are attracted to the plates and removed from the gas
