Electrostatic Forces Flashcards
What is no.1 rule
FRICTION TRANSFERS ELECTRONS
What is electric force governed by
Charge
What is electrostatics measured in
Coulombs ( C )
What two forms do electrostatics come in
Positive and Negative
What are the two basic particles that carry charge
Protons- Positive +1.6x10^19
Electrons - Negative +1.6x10^19
What happens if you move electrons to a common point
They create a static charge
What is the only material you can create a static charge with without a power supply
An insulator
Definition of an insulator (give examples)
Materials that do not allow currents to flow
eg. wood, rubber, plastic
Definition of a conductor ( give example )
Materials that readily allow conduction of electrical current. eg. metals
How do you build a static charge
Take 2 insulators and rub them together
Why can’t you build a static charge with conductors
The charge will just spread out
Name 4 uses of static electricity
Spray Painting
Photocopier
Defibrillation
Electrostatic precipitator
How does spray painting work - spray can
- As paint goes out of can, FRICTION TRANSFERS ELECRONS between paint and nozzle
- Paint all has same charge, paint particles repels each other + spreads out
How does spray painting work - bike frame
Paint has opposite charge to bike - attracts
- evenly paints bike
How does a photocopier work ( 5 steps )
- Charge barrel
- Place document on screen, shine light
- Where light hits barrel, charge resembled
- Spray toner with opposite charge
- Roll barrel
