Q

Describe what is electrophilic addition with halogens

A
  • this is the reaction used to test for presence of alkenes
  • bromine water decolourises when added to an alkene
  • this is because Br2 undergoes electrophilic addition across double bond and orange aqueous Br2 is used up

Q

Describe electrophilic additions with sulfuric acid, why can it act as an electrophile?

A
  • sulfuric acid can act as an electrophile
  • just like hydrogen halides and halogen molecules
  • as they all have a delta positive charge within molecule which is attacked by double bond
