Electrophilic Addition Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
Define electrophile
A
Electron pair acceptot
2
Q
What is electrophilic addition?
A
When an alkene has been turned into something else
Reaction in which an electrophilic species combines with an alkene by breaking double bond and forming new bonds
3
Q
Describe what is electrophilic addition with halogens
A
- this is the reaction used to test for presence of alkenes
- bromine water decolourises when added to an alkene
- this is because Br2 undergoes electrophilic addition across double bond and orange aqueous Br2 is used up
4
Q
Describe electrophilic additions with sulfuric acid, why can it act as an electrophile?
A
- sulfuric acid can act as an electrophile
- just like hydrogen halides and halogen molecules
- as they all have a delta positive charge within molecule which is attacked by double bond
5
Q
Are alkenes good with reacting with electron pair acceptors and why?
A
Alkenes contain a double bond so are good with reacting with electron pair acceptors
