Electronic instrument systems Flashcards
5.1
What were the earliest Air speed indicators made of?
Flexible bamboo strip or metal spring with a paddle on its end
What are the six basic arrangements?
the six flight instruments are
Airspeed indicator (ASI)
Gyro Horizon indicator also known as an Attitude indicator (ADI)
Altimeter
Turn and Bank indicator
Direction indicator also known as Horizontal situation indicator (HSI)
Vertical speed indicator
what do the basic six flight instruments form?
A “picture” of the aircrafts flight condition
Who sets the standards for all aircraft instrument layouts?
ICAO
What is the name of the current standard for electro mechanically operated instruments?
Basic T
What are the standard indicators on a Basic T?
(ASI) Airspeed indicator
(ADI) Attitude direction indicator
Altimeter
Horizontal situation indicator(HSI)
What are electronic instrument systems?
instruments that were replaced with flat screens using LED and LCD
If a screen on an Electronic instrument system fails what can you do to rectify it?
exchange of images between units in case of display failures
What are the advantages of using EIS?
1.more variability and variety
2.displays are coloured
3.important data is accentuated, unimportant data is supressed
4. fewer components are needed
5.all display units for EIS are of the same type
What are the different types of EIS?
- Electronic flight instrument system (EFIS)
- Engine indicating and crew alerting system (EICAS)
- Electronic centralised aircraft monitoring (ECAM)
Are EIS system displays interchangeable?
Yes as a redundancy
What component makes calculations in an EIS system?
CPU
What data busses are used for digital data transmission?
AIRNC 429 buses
how is data transmitted to CPU controlled CRT?
Via display data buses
how is data transmitted to a printer for a hard copy printout?
Via digital data buses
how is data transmitted to a ground receiver?
In digital form to a radio transmitter which then sends data to a ground receiver
What does an Electronic attitude and direction indicator display?
- Pitch and roll info
- ground speed
- airspeed
- flight director information
5.glide slope and localiser deviation
6.numerous warning/status messages
What does an electronic horizontal situation indicator display?
- Magnetic heading
- Radio steering commands for VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR), or Instrument landing system
- Way points, airports and navigation aids
- Distance to go
- Instrument landing system (ILS) steering information
what devices are used in the display screens of glass cockpit?
originally it was CRT screens and later replaced with flat screens using LEDs and LCDs
What impact has a glass cockpit had on pilots?
It has decreased the number and variety of instruments on the panels thereby reducing the pilot workload
What is on the left on the Basic T?
Airspeed
What is on the right on the Basic T?
Altimeter
What is on the centre of the basic T?
Attitude Director indicator
What is on the bottom of the Basic T?
Horizontal Situation Indicator
