5.6 Computer Terminology Flashcards
What is a computer?
An electronic device that
The computer can only understand what language?
Binary
What is a byte?
A word that is eight bits long is called a Byte
What is an instruction?
An instruction is a machine word or set of character in a machine language that directs a computer to take a certain action.
What is a program?
A program is a plan for the solution of a problem
What is a Software?
Programs that enable a computer to function
What are the two types of software?
System software
Application software
What is contained in the Central processing unit (CPU)?
It contains the Arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and the control unit (CU)
What is RAM?
Random access memory
What is ROM?
Read only Memory
What are the main components of a computer?
CPU,ROM, RAM, Buses and the input and output systems
Through which buses does the ROM and CPU communicate through?
Address and Control bus
Which bus receives data from the ROM?
Data bus
If the CPU wants to send an instruction to the ROM it can only send it through which Buses?
Address or Control bus?
The data bus only sends info with the RAM true or false?
True it only transmits to the RAM however it receives from both the RAM and ROM
What is the purpose of the ALU?
Preforms Arithmetic and logic operations on machine words.
What function does the memory unit perform?
Fetch
What function does the control unit perform?
Decode
What function does the ALU perform?
Execute
What is an information computer?
A computer that collects the data and displays the data from a central position*
What do Storage/monitor computers do?
Retain information provided by other systems.
What does Interactive computer do?
Can preform several different tasks depending on operational input
What is the purpose of the control unit?
it directs the operation of the processor usually using a binary decoder to interpret coded instructions that direct the operation of the other units
What is a computer that provides a source of information?
Reference Computer
