Electron Transport Chain (ETC) Flashcards
Where is ETC found
Inner membrane of mitochondria
Aerobic of anaerobic?
Aerobic
What is the purpose of ETC
To use oxygen and high energy electrons to produce a LOT of ATP
Reactants of ETC
10 NADH
2 FADH
6 O2
Products of ETC
26-28 ATP
6 H2O
Describe chemoismosis
H+ gradient across membrane drives cellular work
What is ATP synthase
Enzymes that makes ATP use energy from proton (H+) gradient- flow of H+ back across membrane
4 steps of ATP
1) NADH and FADH2 donate high energy electrons to the ETC
2) energy from electrons are used to pump H+ against concentration gradient
3)oxygen accepts electrons from ETC and combines with H+ to form water
4)H+ travels through ATP synthase, causing it to spin- spinning allows a phosphate group to bond with ADP, making ATP (chemiosmosis)
