Electron Transport Chain Flashcards
How much energy is produced per glucose?
2 ATP, 10 NADH (2 cytosolic and 8 mitochondrial), 2 FADH2 and 2 GTP produced per glucose -> 30-32 ATP in total
Per glucose the Krebs cycle happens twice
Protons required per ATP
If in yeast 10 protons are required to turn the ATPsynthase through one complete cycle to synthesise 3 ATP - also the phosphate symporter pumps in 3 protons with 3 Pi and to synthesise those 3 ATP
(10+3)/3 = 4.33 protons per ATP
In mammals only 8 protons are required to turn the ATP synthase through one complete cycle
(8+3)/3 = 3.66 protons per ATP
So estimated 4 protons are required synthesise 1 ATP
If 4 protons are required synthesise 1 ATP
How many ATP synthesised per NADH and FADH2
- 10 protons are pumped into the IMS per NADH
10/4 = 2.5 ATP per NADH - 6 protons are pumped into the IMS per succinate (FADH2)
6/4 = 1.5 per FADH2
