Electron shells Flashcards
1
Q
Where do electrons occupy?
A
Shells (sometimes called energy levels)
2
Q
Which shell is filled 1st?
A
The one with the lowest energy which is the shell next to the nucleus
3
Q
Only a certain number of electrons are allowed in each shell what is the order of these numbers?
A
2,8,8
4
Q
When are atoms happy?
A
When they have a full outer shells - like the noble gases in group 0
5
Q
How do you work out how to draw the electronic structures?
A
You look at the number of protons (as protons equals electrons) and you work out how many electrons can go on each shell. For Sulfur…..protons = 16 so because of the 2,8,8 rule it can have 2 in its 1st shell, 8 in the 2nd shell and 6 in the 3rd shell
