Compounds and balancing equations Flashcards
What do atoms do to form compounds?
They join together
How are compounds formed?
When different elements react, atoms form chemical bonds with other atoms to form compounds. It is usually difficult to separate the 2 original elements out again
What does making bonds involve?
Atoms giving away , taking or sharing electrons. Only the electrons are involved
What does a compound from a metal and a non-metal consist of?
Ions. The metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions and the non-metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. The opposite charge (positive and negative) of the ions mean that they’re strongly attracted to each other. IONIC bonding
What does a compound from non-metals consist of?
Molecules. Each atoms shares an electron with another atom - this is called a covalent bond. Each atom has to make enough covalent bonds to fill up its outer shell.
What are the properties of a compound like?
They are totally different different from the original elements.
