Electron Microscopes Flashcards
How does an electron produce an image?
Exposes the specimen to electrons.
What are the two types of electron microscopes?
Transmission electron microscope
Scanning electron microscope
What is the function of transmission electron microscopes?
Electrons pass through and around the specimen creating a 2D image with a magnification of x500,000
What is the function of scanning electron microscopes?
Electrons reflect off the specimen producing a 3D image with a magnification of x100,000
What are the advantages of electron microscopes?
The resolution is 0.2nm
Organelles inside cells can be seen
3D images can be produced
What are the disadvantages of electron microscopes?
The sample has to be dead
Expensive
Preparing slide and sample requires a high level of training
