Electron Configuration Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Bohr model?

A

Each electron has a fixed energy - an energy level.

Electrons can jump from one energy level to another but cannot be between levels

A quantum of energy is the amount of energy needed to move an electron from 1 level to another

Q

How do electrons move?

A

They need the right amount of energy to be lost or gained in order to move up or down energy levels

The higher the energy level he father it is from the nucleus.

Q

What is an emission spectra?

A

When atoms absorb energy, electrons move into higher energy levels. These electrons then lids energy by emitting light when they return to lower levels

Q

What are the three rules on how to find the electron configuration?

A

Augbau Principle: electrons occupy the levels of the lowest energy first
Pauli exclusion principle: an atomic orbital may describe at most 2 electrons. To occupy the same orbital, two electrons must have opposite spins; that is, the electron spin must be paired
Hund’s rule: electrons occupy orbitals of the same energy in a way that makes the number of electrons with the same spin direction as large as possible

Q

What is an isotope?

A

A combination of an element with a different number of neutrons.

They are radio active disintegrate or decay in a predictable way and at a specific rate to make other isotopes.

Q

How are isotopes formed

A

Isotopes that are radioactive, disintegrate or decay over a certain period of time to create more isotopes. The radio active isotope is called the parent and the isotope formed by decay is called the daughter
