Electron Configuration Flashcards
1
Q
Core Notation
A
Electrons can be divided into core electrons (completely filled. Have configuration of nearest noble gas with fewer electrons) and outer electrons (all electrons outside the core). ex. Cl: [Ne] 3s2 3p5 (2 + 5 = 7) 17 10 \+7 2p6
2
Q
Electron Configuration
A
Full electron configuration.
ex. Na 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1 (2+2+6+1=11)
3
Q
Electron Configuration Exceptions
A
Filled or half filled d-subshells are stable
ex. Cr: [Ar] 4s2 3d4
[Ar] 4s1 3d5
4
Q
Electron Configuration of Ions
A
Fluorine has 9 protons so it would go to Helium which has 2. If F becomes charged, F-, it would then have 10 protons.
ex.
F: [He] 1s2 2s2 3p5
F -1: [He] 1s2 2s2 3p6
5
Q
Anions
A
Negatively charged ions
6
Q
Cations
A
Positively charged ions (cats have pos)
7
Q
Steps
A
- Write electron configuration for atom
- Remove electrons from outermost shell first
- P(t)SD (Owen has PTSD but Teddy left so its just PSD lol)
ex. Sn2+
Sn: [Kr] 5s2 4d10 5p2
Sn2+ [Kr] 5s2 4d10
Sn4+ [Kr] 4d10
