Electron Configuration Flashcards

1
Q

Core Notation

A
Electrons can be divided into core electrons (completely filled. Have configuration of nearest noble gas with fewer electrons) and outer electrons (all electrons outside the core).
ex. Cl: [Ne] 3s2 3p5 (2 + 5 = 7)
      17 10
           \+7
           2p6

Electron Configuration Exceptions

A

Filled or half filled d-subshells are stable
ex. Cr: [Ar] 4s2 3d4
[Ar] 4s1 3d5

Q

Electron Configuration of Ions

A

Fluorine has 9 protons so it would go to Helium which has 2. If F becomes charged, F-, it would then have 10 protons.
ex.
F: [He] 1s2 2s2 3p5
F -1: [He] 1s2 2s2 3p6

Q

Steps

A
  1. Write electron configuration for atom
  2. Remove electrons from outermost shell first
  3. P(t)SD (Owen has PTSD but Teddy left so its just PSD lol)
    ex. Sn2+
    Sn: [Kr] 5s2 4d10 5p2
    Sn2+ [Kr] 5s2 4d10
    Sn4+ [Kr] 4d10
