Electron Configuration Flashcards
The state when all electrons of an atom are in the lowest possible energy level
Ground state
A packet of light energy that carries a quantum of energy
Photon
When an electron jumps to a higher energy level, the atom is in…
Excited state
Theory that is impossible to know both position and speed of an electron simultaneously
Heisenberg Uncertainty
Theory that no two electrons in an atom can share the same 4 quantum numbers
Pauli Exclusion
Theory that elections fill lowest energy orbitals firsts
Augbau Process
Theory that, within a sub shell, electrons prefer to occult their own orbital
Hund’s Rule
A term describing the other most electrons in an atom
Valence Electrons
Positive charged ion
Cation
Negatively charged ion
Anion
Most stable type of electron configuration
Noble Gases
Region in space where an electron is likely to exist
Atomic Orbital
Red Light
Low Freq, Low Energy, but Long Wavelength
Violet
High frequency, high energy, short wavelength
Radio Waves VS X-ray
RW: LOW ENERGY LONG WAVELENGTH LOW FREQUENCY X-RAYS: HIGH ENERGY SHORT WAVELENGTH HIGH FREQUENCY
How are atomic emission spectra generated?
- Electron is in ground state, energy is added
2 electron moves to higher energy level (aka Excited state) - Electron goes back down to ground state and loses Energy. Energy corresponds to certain wavelength and color
Bohr’s Model
Electrons orbit the nucleus
Only works for hydrogen atom
Further from nucleus means higher energy level
Quantum Mechanical Model
Small, positive, tight, and dense nucleus
Surrounded by electrons in orbitals
Frequency
of wave cycles that pass a given point per unit time
Wavelength
Distance between crests
Amplitude
Height from zero to crest
Color has most energy?
Violet
