Electron Configuration Flashcards
What is the Principal Quantum Number?
A number that represents the overall energy of each orbital, sets of orbitals with the same n value are called shells or energy levels.
Define an orbital.
A region where two electrons with opposite spins can be found in an atom.
What does the Principal Quantum number indicate?
The energy of an orbital and it’s distance from the nucleus, therefore it’s shell number
What is another term for an electron shell?
An energy level.
If the shell is further from the nucleus, what is the effect on the Principal Quantum number?
It is larger.
If the Principal Quantum Number is larger what was the effect on the electron shell?
A larger Quantum number means a higher energy level or electron shell.
How many electrons are held in a shell?
2n squared
Ie: Shell one= 1 x 1 x 2
How many electrons can fill an orbital?
Two.
What are the four types of orbitals?
- S
- d
- p
- f
What shape are s orbitals?
Spherical
What is the first orbital filled in a shell?
An s orbital
How many s orbitals can a shell contain?
One
What shape is a p orbital?
An eight shape
From what shell do p orbitals start?
Shell two
How many electrons can a p orbital hold?
2
How many p orbitals are in a shell?
Three p orbitals
At what angle are p orbitals to each other?
Right angles
From what shell do d orbitals start?
Shell three
How many d orbitals are held in a shell?
5
How many electrons can be held in a full set of d orbitals?
10
From what shell do f orbitals start?
Four
How many f orbitals in a shell?
7
What is a sub shell?
Groups of orbitals of the same type grouped together
What is the 3d 4s overlap?
The 4s shell is filled before 3d as it has a lower energy than 3d
