Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) Flashcards
Does each grain have its own orientation?
Yes
How is texture measured?
Using X-Ray diffraction by systematically changing the angular orientation of the sample and measuring diffraction peaks
What do we measure using EBSD?
The micro texture
What are the spaces in between atoms called?
Interplanar spacing
What is used as the slit in EBSD?
The interplanar spacing
What source is used for EBSD?
X-rays (XRD) or electrons (EBSD) (SEM)
What are the axis indicated by abc on a simple cube named in crystal direction?
(towards, across, up), (x,y,z) on a cube
What is meant by a family of directions, and what brackets are used?
[001], [010] and [100] as well as their reverse directions are all in the <001> family
What brackets are used for an individual direction?
[square brackets]
What is the indexing of individual and families of planes
(111) = individual plane
{111} = family of planes
Why is the sample inclined, and to what angle?
Increase the interaction volume (70 degrees)
How does EBSD work?
An electron beam is sent onto the sample, and is the diffracted due to the interplanar spacing. From there, a phosphor screen carries on the interference directly to the camera, which then digitally enhances the image. These created images are called kikuchi patterns
How are kikuchi patterns indexed?
Zones where the lines cross are indexed, which gives us the plane famailies
what is bragg’s equation?
(n)λ = 2d sinθ
However, the n isnt necessary
where θ Braggs angle of hkl plane
d = interplanar spacing of hkl plane
What does it mean if kikuchi pattern bands have the same width
They are of the same family
