Electromagnetism Flashcards
Describe how electromagnetism works
An electric current in a conductor produces a magnetic field
The larger the current, the stronger the magnetic field
The direction of the magnetic field is proportional to the direction of the current
Describe the magnetic field around a straight wire
Concentric circles with the wire in the centre
Describe the magnetic field around a flat circular coil
Concentric ellipses of magnetic field lines around the coil
Explain how you can make an electromagnet
Current carrying wire coiled as a solenoid with a soft iron core
What does it mean if a magnetic material is ‘soft’
It loses its induced magnetism easily e.g. iron
What does it mean if a magnetic material is ‘hard’
It keeps its induced magnetism permanently e.g. steel
How can you increase the strength of the magnetic field around a solenoid
By adding a ‘soft’ iron core
What is electromagnetic induction
The creation of voltage in a wire which is experiencing a change in magnetic field
