Electromagnetism Flashcards
Which 4 elements are in magnetic materials?
Iron, Nickel, Cobalt and alloy
In which direction do the lines around a bar magnet go?
From north to south
How are a strong or weak magnetic field show in a diagram?
The closer the lines are, the stronger the magnetic field. The further away away from the magnet you get, the weaker the field is.
Where on the magnet is the force the strongest?
On the poles
What will happen if two poles of a magnet are put near each other?
The will exert a force on each other which can be attractive or repulsive. Two like poles will repel. Two unlike poles will attract.
What kind of force are attraction and repulsion?
What is a permanent magnet?
A magnet that produces its own magnetic field
What is an induced magnet?
A material that becomes a magnet when it is placed in a magnetic field
What is the force like between a permanent and induced magnet?
The force between an induced and permanent magnet always causes a force of attraction
What happens when an induced magnet is removed from a magnetic field?
When removed from the magnetic field an induced magnet loses most/all of its magnetism quickly and stop producing a magnetic field
When is a magnetic field created around a wire?
When current flows through a wire, a magnetic field is created around the wire
What is a magnetic field?
The region around a magnet where a force acts on another magnet or on a magnetic material (iron, steel, cobalt and nickel)
Which two factors change the strength of a magnetic field
The strength of the magnetic field produced changes with the current and the distance from the wire. The larger the current through the wire, or closer to the wire you are, the stronger the magnetic field.
