Electromagnetism Flashcards
Electric currents produce their own (blank)
Magnetic Fields
The direction of the magnetic field depends on what?
The direction of the current
Which rule can we use to find the direction of the magnetic field in a wire which has current flowing through it?
Right hand rule. Fingers indicate direction of magnetic field when thumb is in direction of current.
How is the magnetic field inside a solenoid described?
Strong and uniform
How is the magnetic field outside a solenoid described?
Like the one around a bar magnetic
Why are electromagnets useful?
They were only be a magnetic field as long as there is current flowing. This allows us to turn the magnetic field on and off
What are the 4 ways we can increase an electromagnet’s strength?
- Increase the current that flows through the solenoid
- Increase the number of turns in the solenoid while keeping the length of it the same
- Add an iron core to the inside of the solenoid
