Electromagnetic Waves Flashcards
Electromagnetic spectrum
The complete range of electromagnetic waves placed in order of increasing frequency. Is made up of radio waves, microwaves, infrared rays, and gamma rays
Electromagnetic wave
A transverse wave that is made up of vibrating electric and magnetic fields that move through space or some medium at the speed of light
Radio waves
Electromagnetic waves with the longest wavelengths and the lowest frequencies
Microwaves
Have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than radio waves do
Radar
- stands for radio detection and ranging
- a system that uses reflected microwaves to detect objects and measure their distance and speed
Infrared rays
Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths shorter than those of microwaves. Carry more energy than microwaves, and are often called heat rays
Thermogram
An image that shows regions of different temperatures in different colors
Visible light
Electromagnetic waves that you can see
Ultraviolet rays
Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths just shorter than those of visible light. Carry more energy than visible light and can damage or kill living cells
X-rays
Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths just shorter than those of ultraviolet rays. Carry more energy than ultraviolet rays and can penetrate most matter
Gamma rays
Electromagnetic waves with the shortest wavelengths and highest frequencies. Have the greatest amount of energy and are the most penetrating
