DNA/RNA Vocab Flashcards
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passed from one generation to the next.
Double helix
The shape of a DNA molecule
Adenine
One of the four nitrogen bases that make up the rungs of DNA; it is abbreviated A
Thymine
One of the four nitrogen bases that make up the rungs of DNA; it is abbreviated T
Guanine
One of the four nitrogen bases that make up the rungs of DNA; it is abbreviated G
Cytosine
One of four nitrogen bases that make up the rungs of DNA; it is abbreviated C
Nitrogen bases
Molecules that contain nitrogen and other elements.
Uracil
A nitrogen base found in RNA instead of thymine; abbreviated U
Gene
A sequence of a DNA molecule that contains the information to code for one specific protein.
DNA Replication
The process in which an identical copy of a DNA strand is formed for a new cell
RNA
Ribonucleic acid; the genetic messenger that carries the genetic code from DNA inside the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
