Electromagnetic Radiation Flashcards
Define: X-Rays
High energy electromagnetic radiation; can be produced when fast moving electrons strike a metal target
What frequencies do X-Rays have?
10^18 - 10^21 Hz
Define: Electromagnetic Spectrum
The wide band of different types of electromagnetic radiation from radio waves to gamma rays
Define: Polarization
Confining a wave to vibrate in one direction
Define: Microwaves
Electromagnetic radiation that is used to increase the motion of sugar, fat and specifically water molecules, causing more molecules to increase in molecular speed as well and create heat.
Define: Visible Light
Complete range of all colours of light that can be seen by the human eye
Define: Ultraviolet Radiation
Electromagnetic radiation emitted by very hot objects
What is the frequency of ultraviolet radiation?
Frequencies between 7.5x10^14 - 1x10^18 Hz
Define: Extremely Low Frequency Waves
Extremely low electromagnetic radiation that is emitted from Ac outlets, MRI machines, and radio stations
Define: Radio Waves
Low electromagnetic radiation that is used to listen to the radio, and used to be used to watch TV
What is the frequency of radio waves?
Frequencies less than 3000GHz
What are the effects of microwaves on living tissue?
Can be hazardous because of the water content in living tissue. Known to cause cataracts
