Electrolytes (what they do) Flashcards
Sodium
controls and regulates volume of body fluids, transmission of nerve impulses and muscle contraction
Chloride
Maintains osmotic pressure in blood, produces hydrochloric acid, major component in certain body fluids
Calcium
nerve impulse, blood clotting, muscle contraction/relaxation, b12 absorption
Potassium
Chief regulator of cellular enzyme activity and water content. Transmission of electrical impulses in various tissues (nerve, heart, skeletal, intestinal, lung, tissue)
Phosphate
Involved in important chemical reaction in the body, promotes energy storage, cell division and hereditary traits
Magnesium
Metabolism of Carbohydrates and proteins, produces cardiac vasodilation, neuromuscular function
