Electrolytes and Fluid Balance Flashcards
Chovostek’s Sign
Contraction of facial muscles w/light tap over facial nerves. (hypocalcemia)
Trousseau’s Sign
Carpal spasm of arm caused by inflating a BP cuff.
Isotonic Solution
Increases intravascular volume and used to treat fluid volume deficits.
Hypotonic Solution
Increases intracellular volume and used to treat intracellular dehydration from conditions such as DKA, hyperosmolar hyperglycemia.
Hypertonic Solution
Increases extracellular volume and used as a volume expander.
Colloid IV fluids
Contain large particles that don’t pass through the semi-permeable membrane. Increases intravascular volume and dare used to treat malnourished pts.
Dehydration
When free water loss exceeds free water intake.
Hypovolemia
Decreased volume of circulating blood in the body.
Hypervolemia
Too much fluid in the body.
