electrolysis paper Flashcards
explain how hydroxine slows corrosion
hydroxine reacts with the O2 in the water, changing it to 2H2O
This means no O2 is left to corrode the metals
explain the copper mass results
Anode: Cu -> Cu2+ +2e-
(copper atoms become copper ions by losing two electrons)
Cathode: Cu2+ + 2e- -> Cu
(copper ions become copper atoms by gaining two electrons)
why is copper alloyed with aluminium
copper slides off aluminium easily
aluminium doesn’t slide off copper easily
this is bc they are two diff sized atoms
electrolysis definition
an electric current flows through an electrolyte, decomposing it into its two ions
define squeaky pop set
put a lit splint into a tube of gas. if hydrogen is present you will hear a squeaky pop
hydroxide discharged equation
4OH- -> 2H2O + O2 + 4e-
