Electrolysis Flashcards
Define Anode.
The positively charged electrode by which the electrons leave an electrical device. (Oxidation takes place here)
Define Cathode.
A cathode is a type of electrode through which electrons move. (Reduction takes place here)
Define Electrolysis.
The chemical decomposition by passing an electric current through a solution containing ions.
Define Electrolyte.
A solution that contains ions and can be decomposed by electrolysis.
Define Electrode.
A conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an object.
Define Oxidation.
The loss of electrons.
Define Reduction.
The gain of electrons.
Define Oxidising agent.
The substance that is reduced in a reaction and aids in oxidation.
Define Reducing agent.
The substance that is oxidized and aids in reduction.
