Electrolysis Flashcards
Explain electrode
A conductor in which electricity enters and leaves
Cathode
Negatively charged electrode
Anode
Positively charged electrode
Electrolyte
A liquid which contains ions and can be decomposed by electrolysis
Why is dc not ac used in electrolysis
Cathode and anode are constantly switching places
What happens at electrolysis at the cathode
Cations receive electrons (reduction) to change an atom or moldecule
What happens in anode
The anions lose electrons to form atoms or molecules
Oxidation
Outline electrolysis of brine (NaCl)
And equation
Large scale process used to manufacture chlorine from salt.
Anode 2cl- + 2e > cl2
2H+ + 2e > H2 reduction
Electrolysis of electroplating using copper sulfate
Plated connects to negative terminal of power supply.
Cooper connected to + terminal
Electrolyte is coppersulfate solution
Purify copper during manufacture.
