Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
This is a chemical change caused by passing an electric current through an ionic compound which is either molten or solution
What is the anode?
The positively charged electrode
What is the cathode?
This is the negatively charged electrode
What is an electrolyte?
This is a liquid which conducts electricity. It can be a molten ionic compound or an ionic substance dissolved in water (aqueous solution). In both case the ions are free to move about and so are able to conduct electricity
What are electrodes?
These conduct electricity and are dipped in the electrolyte. They are called the anode and cathode
Which ions are attracted towards the negative cathode?
Positive metal ions and hydrogen ions
Which ions are attracted towards the + anode?
Negative non-metal ions
Explain what happens when lead bromide is electrolysed
1) cathode
2) anode
1) The Pb2+ will move to the cathode
The Br- will move to the anode
What does OILRIG stand for?
Oxidation Is the Loss of electrons Reduction Is the Gain of electrons
What is the test for chlorine?
Blue litmus paper turns red then white
What does ‘-‘ mean after a letter or number?
It has too many electrons/needs to get rid of some
What does ‘+’ mean after a letter or number?
Doesn’t have enough electrons/needs more
What is the test for hydrogen?
A lighted spill goes out with a squeaky pop
What is the test for chlorine?
Chlorine turns litmus paper red the white unite
