Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis
Passing through an electric current through ionic substances that are molten or in a solution to break then down into the elements
When an ionic substance is melted or dissolved in water, what happens
The ions are free to move about within the liquid or solution
What is the substance that is broken down called?
The electrolyte
What happens during electrolysis
Positively charged ions move to the negative electrode
Negatively charged ions move to the positive electrode
What is electrolysis used to do?
Electroplate objects
Why do we need to electroplate objects
Could be for copper plating and silver plating
What happens at the negative electrode
Positively charged ions gain electrons (reduction)
What happens at the positive electrode
Negatively charged ions lose electrons
Oxidation
What are oxidation and reduction
Redox reactions
What is OILRIG
Oxidation is losing
Reduction is gaining
What is the negative electrode called
Cathode
What is the positive electrode called
Anode
What are ions
Atoms with a positive or negative charge
What happens if there’s a mixture of ions
The products formed depend on the reactivity of the elements involved
Aluminium is manufactured by the electrolysis of what?
A molten mixture of aluminium oxide and cryolite
