Electrolysis Flashcards

1
Q

What are the different ways of doing:

Electrolysis

A
  1. Molten
  2. Aqueous
  3. Other options do not work as opposite charges need to be free to move around for the current to complete the circuit

Q

What happens in:

Electrolysis

A

Ions in the elctrolyte move to the electrode where they either lose or gain electrons to become elements and are discharged

Q

Rules of:

Electrolysis

A
  • If the electrolyte is molten the positive metal ion is discharged at the cathode and the negative non-metal ion is discharged at the anode
  • If the elctrolyte is in solution then group 1 or 2 metal converts to hydrogen
  • The product at the anode is either oxygen or a halogen, families gets converted to oxygen

Q

What is:

Electrolysis

A
  • The break-down of a substance by electricity
  • The way highly reactive metals are extracted from their compounds
  • Electrolytes are substances that don’t conduct electricity when solid but when molten or dissolved in water
