electrolysis Flashcards
What is current?
The flow of ions in a metal or graphite and flow of ions in a liquid or dissolved ionic compound
When can ions conduct?
They can only conduct if the ions are mobile in a solution or liquid.
Why do simple covalent bonds not conduct electricity?
Simple covalent bonds do not conduct electricity because the molecules are neutral and there are no charged particles (no ions or electrons) to move and carry charge. There are no delocalised electrons that are free to move and carry charge.
What is electrolysis?
The decomposition of compounds using electricity.
Describe the products of the electrolysis of lead bromide.
Br- ions lose electrons to become atoms of Br2 at the anode.
At the cathode Pb2+ gains electrons to form Pb which sinks to the bottom as silvery grey liquid.
What is an ore?
A rock contains enough metal for profitable extraction of that metal.
What are the costs of electrolyisis?
High cost to provide energy for the circuit
High cost to replace the anodes which get damaged by carbon dioxide which is formed.
