Electrolysis Flashcards
What happens to ion’s when they are solid
They do not conduct electricity
What happens when ions are melted or dissolved in water ?
The ions are free to move around. They can then consuct electricity
What is it called when ionic compounds are dissolved or melted ?
Electrolytes
What are electrodes
An electric current that cn be passed through the electrolyte
What is electrolysis
As the electric current passes through the electrolyte, the ions of the ionic compound will move towards the electrodes
What is cathode
The positive metal ions are attracted to the negative electrodes (the metal element will be formed at the negative electrode
What is anode
The negative non metal ions are attracted to the positive electrode
Ionic compounds are made up of what
Made up of ions of a metal and a non metal
Extraction of metals
Metals are extracted from their ore using a method dependent of their position on the reactivity series.More reactive metals are extracted using electrolysis whereas less reactive metals can be heated with carbon.
