Electrochemistry Flashcards
What is an electrochemical cell?
A container that separates the oxidation and reduction half reactions of a coupled redox reaction
What is electrochemistry?
The study of interconversions between chemical and electrical energy by redox reactions
What is an electrode?
Where electron transfer occurs in an electrochemical cell
What is an ionic conductor?
In an electrochemical cell, it allows passage of ions between half-cells to keep them electrically neutral
What is a galvanic cell?
An electrochemical cell in which its spontaneous redox reaction produces Gibbs free energy which can be converted to electrical energy, which can then be used for work
What is an electrolytic cell?
An electrochemical cell in which an external source of electrical work provides Gibbs free energy to drive a typically non-spontaneous redox reaction
