Electrochemistry Flashcards
What are the inert 2 rods called?
Electrodes
What mnemonic is used to identify the 2 electrode’s charges?
PANIC:”positive is anode and negative is catode”
Anions and Cations move to their respective sides, which to either go to?
Anions go to the anode and the cations go to the cathode
When electrolysis happens 2 reactions take place, list them
Extra marks if you can say where they happen
Reduction and Oxidation
Reduction happens at the Cathode and Oxidation happens at the Anode
In molten electrolytes (the substance thats going to be separeted) where does the metal and non-metal move towards?
At the cathode: The metal
At the anode:the non-metal
Whats the most common materials used as inert electrodes?
Platinum and Graphite
Why can’t we use any other element/metal as an electrode?
Explain why?
So it doesn’t interfere with the Reduction and Oxidation reaction in the Anode and Cathode.
If we use another element, that element will be reduced or oxidized instead of the real metal/non-metal we are trying to reduce or oxidized
What is the use of electroplating
enhance appearance and prevent corrosion
If we want to electroplate an object, how do we do it?
1.We replace the Anode with the coating metal and the Cathode with the object.
2.We put them in a special solution
3.The metal will transfer to the object as a coating
