Electrochemistry Flashcards
Define standard electrode potential
It is the voltage produced when a half cell is connected to the standard H - half cell under standard conditions
Define standard cell potential
It is the voltage produced when two half cells are connected to each other under standard conditions
When is a reaction feasible?
If the calculated Ecell value is positive then a reaction is predicted to be feasible
Reasons why reaction may not be feasible
1) High activation energy. This cold be because strong bonds need to be broken
2) Conditions are non-standard
Ecell formula
Ecell = Ered - Eoxi
The nernst equation
E = Eo + 0.059/n log (oxi species/reduced species)
Equation for gibbs
G = nEcellF
Equation for charge (Q)
Q = It
