Electrochemistry Flashcards
Single electrode potential
The electrical potential difference set up between the electrode and the solution
Standard electrode potential
When an electrode Is constructed under standard states of 25°C, 1 atm pressure with one molar concentration of electrolyte in the solution then it’s potential is said to be standard electrode potential
Standard electrode
The electrodes who’s potentials are well known and constant with time
Electrochemical series
The sequential arrangement of electrodes In order of increasing standard reduction electrode potential is called electrochemical series.
Application of ECS
1) Calculation of standard cell potential
2) Predicting the oxidizing and reducing strengths of electrode materials
3) Predicting the liberation of hydrogen gas from acids by metals
4) For predicting the direction of metal displacement reaction
5) Predicting relative reactivities of elements
Salt bridge
It is a U-shaped glass containing concentrated solution of an inert electrolyte like KCl, KNO3 etc.
Functions of salt bridge
1) Allows movement of ions from one half cell to another half cell so without mixing the two solutions
2) Complete the electrical circuit
3) Maintains electrical neutrality
4) Prevents physical transference of the electrolytes from one half cell to another
Disadvantages of an electrochemical cell.
1) they use salt bridges having high internal resistance
2) lack compactness and ruggedness
Advantages and disadvantages of fuel cell?
1) high efficiency from 75%- 90%
2) safe for environment as water is the only by product
3) no drop in voltage with time
1) high cost of catalyst
2) corrosive nature of electrolyte
