Electrochemical series Flashcards
What’s the electrochemical series?
basically just a list of standard electrode potentials for different half cells.
For more NEGATIVE ELECTRODE POTETNIALS:
Right hand side substances are more easily oxidised
left hand substances are more stable
For more POSITIVE ELECTRODE POTENTIALS:
left hand side is more easily reduced
right hand side substances are more stable
equation:
E reduced - E oxidised
when drawing an electrochemical cell, what do the 2 double vertical lines represent?
salt bridge
- reduced forms go on the ends, oxidised forms go in the middle
MORE NEGATIVE= ?
OXIDISED
When predicting if a metal can react with aqueous ions of another metal….
THE MORE NEGATIVE EQUATION FLIPS
THE POSITIVE ONE STAYS THE SAME
reaction is feasible if the:
reduced-oxidised = positive
eg. +0.34-(-0.76) = +1.10V
