batteries and fuel cells Flashcards
What are the 2 half equations for lithium ion:
Li + e- -> Li+
Li+ + CoO2 + e- -> Li+[CoO2]-
forms lithium cobalt oxide
One type of lithium ion is made up from…
graphite electrode
lithium cobalt oxide electrode
How are batteries recharged?
By making electrons flow in the opposite directions around the circuit, reversing the reaction.
What is special about a fuel cell?
Chemicals are stored separately outside the cell, and are FED INTO the cell when electricity is needed.
For the alkaline hydrogen oxygen fuel cell
what is the reaction at the negative electrode?
2H2 + 4OH- -> 4H2O + 4e-
g) (aq) (l
For the alkaline hydrogen oxygen fuel cell
what is the reaction at the positive electrode?
O2 + 2H2O +4e- -> 4OH-
g) (l) (aq
What is the flow of electrons in an “alkaline hydrogen oxygen fuel cell” ?
what is the flow of OH- ions in an “alkaline hydrogen oxygen fuel cell” ?
Electrons flow from the negative electrode through a wire , to the positive electrode
OH- ions pass through the anion exchange membrane towards the negative elctrode.
What is the purpose of the anion exchange membrane?
So that anions can pass through but hydrogen or oxygen gas can not.
What is the OVERALL PURPOSE of alkaline hydrogen oxygen fuel cell?
Hydrogen and oxygen react to form water
2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O
g) (g) (g
What is the main advantage of using fuel cells in cars than an internal combustion engine?
Fuel cells are more efficient, as they convert more available energy into kinetic energy to get the car moving.
Disadvantage of internal combustion engine?
They waste a lot of energy producing heat.
what are some more benefits of using fuel cells in cars
hint: to do with emissions
The only waster product is water, so no toxic chemicals to dispose off and no CO2 emissions.
Fuel cells, don’t need to be recharged, as long as enough oxygen and hydrogen gas is supplied, cell will still be able to produce electricity.
What are some disadvantages of using fuel cells?
- ENERGY is needed to actually produce a supply of hydrogen and oxygen.
-
how can the water waste product from fuel cells be used?
electrolysis of water can produce hydrogen and oxygen gas
- HOWEVER, a disadvantage of this, is that ELECTRICITY is required.
- and a disadvantage of this is that, electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels.
- entire process isn’t carbon neutral.
What is something to be aware of whilst handling hydrogen gas?
It is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE
- needs to be handled carefully when stored or transported.
