Electrochemical Cells Flashcards
Method to measure the EMF of an electrochemical cell of copper and Zn
Cu cell: place a piece of clean copper into a 100cm3 beaker of 1moldm-3 CuSO4 solution
Zn: place a piece of clean zinc into a beaker of 1 moldm-3 ZnSO4 solution
Prepare salt bridge by placing paper into a saturated NaCl solution and place each end in each beaker
Connect voltmeter to each piece of metal using crocodile clips
Measure and record EMF
Hazards of measuring EMF
ZnSO4: threat to environment
Dangerous if inhaled or in eyes and skin
NaCl: irritates eyes
FeSO4 can affect liver
CuSO4 is an irritant to eyes and causes nausea
How to reduce risk of measuring EMF
Goggles
Don’t eat or drink or inhale
Wash hands
Call poison control if ingested
Disposal procedure for chemical in electrochemical cell
Use waster disposal service (don’t pour down sink
