Q

Explain how to find if a reduction/oxidation reaction is spontanous?

A

Write the equation. Dissociate the ionic compounds into there ions.

Go to the half reaction table and find out what elements are Reducing agents and which are oxidizing agents. OA on left RA on the right. (some can be both)(some may no be used if all elements arnt there).

Find which are the stronger OA and Ra. Make Half reactions. Switch the SRA around.

Balance electrons. and add the reactions together.

If SOA is above SRA the reaction is Spontanious

Q

How would you decide if which elemtents were stonger oxidizing agents without the chart.

A

By making a table of the half reactions, and placing which elements are stronger oxidixing agents relative to if the reaction is spontainous or not. If it is spontanous The Oxizing agent of the reaction is stronger.

6
Q

What makes an element a strong oxidizing agent?

A

Relative to the half reaction charts. The non mentals are high on the reduction reactions because they have the highest electo negativity so they have the greatest pull to gain electrons. They really want to gain a extra electron to fill there orbital

Q

What is Electrochemistry?

A

Iis the chemistry or reactions that occur between elements due to elements being attracted to electrons. More electro negative elements tend to be the oxidizing agents, and steal electrons.

A
19

What is a hydrogen fuel cell and what is the electrolyte used?

Explain the corrosion of iron

A
21
Q

What are the half reactions Fe of corrosion?

A
22
Q

What is cathodic protection?

A

Impressed current: uses a battery or generator to create an anode.

Sacrificial anode uses a more reactive metal (A Stronger reducing agent) such as zinc or magnesium. to act as an anode

23
Q

What chart is used to find if a reaction between elements will happen or not? Explain it.

A
24
Q

Why do can some ions be in an aquous solution for electrolysis?

A

Because H2o is higher OA than some metal ions. Meaning H2o is more likely to take the electrons from the cathode and turn into 02 and hydrogen.

Ions that are stronger oxidatizing agents than water (higher on the chart) can be used in aques solutions.
