Electrisity And The National Grid Flashcards
What is the function of the national grid?
To supply energy to Britain.
What is the national grid?
The national grid is the network of pylons and cables the whole of Britain.
Why do we transmit electricity with a very high voltage and low current? What would be the problem if we didn’t?
In order to transmit the huge amount of electricity needed you need either a high voltage or high current. We use high voltage because the problem with high current is that it loses energy through heat.
What do transformers do?
Step up: step up voltage and step down current.
Step down: step down voltage and step up current.
The both work with AC current.
What does the national grid consist of?
Step up transformer –> pylons –> step down transformer –> buildings
High voltage cables
Why don’t we have high voltage cables in our houses?
It is not safe for use as it could jump through the air and kill.
What problems does the national grid pose?
The high voltage cables could kill people.
