electricty topic one Flashcards
topic one
Where are protons and neutrons?
In the nucleus
What charge are atoms?
Neutral- balance between protons and electrons
Laws of electrical charges (3)
opposite charges attract
like charges repel
charged objects attract neutral objects
What is electrostatic charge?
the charge on an ion through friction
What is charge seperation?
occurs when a charged object is brought close to a neutral object
How does static electricty occur?
when there is an embalance of electrons between 2 objects
How does a Van De Graaf Generator work?
A rubber belt rubs on a piece of metal aquiring negative friction from the build up of electrons, this is then transferred to the sphere.
Difference between static and current electricty
Static- rapid discharge of electrons
Current- continous flow of electrons
What are amps used for?
measures the rate at which an electrical current flows
What does every circut need?
Energy source, conductor, load/resistance
What is voltage?
the force that pushes electrons through the circut (how much energy each charged particle carries)
What is the Canadian Standards Council?
make labels to identify the amount of required voltage to opperate an electrical device
Fuses vs circut breakers
fuses- melt if the current is too high
circut breakers- trip a spring mechanism to stop the flow of electricity
Dry cells vs wet cells
Dry cells have their chemicals in a paste form
Wet cells have their chemicals in a liquid form
Electrolysis?
electricty used to split molecules into their elements
Electroplating?
Covering a material in a stronger substance
